The revolution will not come without chaos. Publishers are in crisis mode right now defending their own relevance: since ebooks bridge the moat for would-be authors, publishers have to retool the services they offer. Like you highlighted here, as an author you can do your own marketing (social media), editing, market analysis, and networking (for reviews and blurbs) more easily than before, so why go through agents or a publishers at all?
Perhaps because they still manage a network of people who do all those things better than you. I think the idea of *just worrying about the writing* will always appeal to authors regardless of the increasing viability of the DIY approach. But publishers had better make these services worth their cut. Once that's figured out, I agree that most everyone will benefit vastly from the revolution.
Except for printers and shippers. Those guys are pretty much hosed.

Bezos is being very quiet. He just keeps hinting in interviews that something great is coming from Amazon. Either they've got nothing, or it really is something huge that they're trying to keep out of the media.

When B&N dropped the price of nook, everyone was talking about the "price war" between Amazon and B&N. I'm not so sure the two companies didn't conspire in an effort to make Borders' Kobo overpriced the day it was released.

This B&N conflict has gotten so ugly that I think Riggio should hire a royal taster. Changes within the book giants are to be expected since the industry itself is in such flux, but unless B&N gets the leadership question resolved soon, it'll have a lot of trouble navigating the shifting waters.
By the way, any drama going on within Amazon? Or is Jeff Bezos just having a ball watching all this?
